Color splicing sequence of 48-core optical cable

A 48-core optical cable uses the standard 12-color sequence repeated across four buffer tubes, with each fiber uniquely identified by its tube color and position within the tube.

Standard 12-Color Sequence

The TIA-598-C standard defines the following 12-color sequence for individual fibers: 1. Blue, 2. Orange, 3. Green, 4. Brown, 5. Slate (Gray), 6. White, 7. Red, 8. Black, 9. Yellow, 10. Violet, 11. Rose (Pink), 12. Aqua (Light Blue) .

Applying the Sequence to a 48-Core Cable

For cables with more than 12 fibers, the fibers are organized into buffer tubes, each containing 12 fibers. In a 48-core cable, there are typically 4 buffer tubes, and each tube is assigned a unique tube color (often following the same 12-color sequence for tube identification). The fibers inside each tube follow the standard 12-color sequence.

Example Tube and Fiber Mapping

  • Tube 1 (Blue Tube): Fibers 1–12 → Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua
  • Tube 2 (Orange Tube): Fibers 13–24 → Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua
  • Tube 3 (Green Tube): Fibers 25–36 → Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua
  • Tube 4 (Brown Tube): Fibers 37–48 → Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua To identify a specific fiber, determine the tube number and the fiber position within that tube. For example, Fiber #34 is in the 3rd tube (Green Tube) and is the 10th fiber within that tube (Violet) .

Practical Notes

  • Each tube may have a colored stripe or printed legend to distinguish repeated sequences.
  • Ribbon cables follow the same 12-color sequence for each ribbon.
  • Correct identification ensures error-free splicing, patching, and maintenance in high-density installations . By following this system, technicians can reliably locate and splice any fiber in a 48-core cable without confusion, maintaining compliance with TIA-598-C standards.
