Monitoring Switch Aggregation Port

Monitoring switch aggregation ports can be achieved using TAP aggregation, SPAN/RSPAN, or traffic mirroring on link aggregation groups (LAGs) to capture and analyze traffic efficiently.

Understanding Port Aggregation

Port aggregation, also known as link aggregation or LAG, combines multiple physical ports into a single logical interface to increase bandwidth and provide redundancy. Aggregated ports can operate in static mode (ON) or dynamic mode using LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) in active or passive configurations. Dynamic LAGs negotiate with the remote device to form a logical link, while static LAGs do not require negotiation. Consistency across aggregated ports is critical, including STP settings, VLAN membership, port speed, duplex mode, and link type (trunk, hybrid, or access) to ensure proper operation and monitoring compatibility .

Monitoring Methods

1. TAP Aggregation

TAP (Test Access Point) aggregation allows multiple network points to be monitored simultaneously. A dedicated switch can be configured with tap ports (receiving traffic) and tool ports (sending traffic to monitoring devices). TAP aggregation supports N:M packet replication, enabling real-time capture of different traffic types for analysis by tools such as packet sniffers, IPS devices, or RMON probes. This method increases visibility and can simplify network monitoring without requiring dedicated packet broker hardware .

2. SPAN and RSPAN

SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer) and RSPAN (Remote SPAN) mirror traffic from one or more source ports or VLANs to a destination port for monitoring. For aggregated ports, SPAN sessions can be configured to capture traffic from all member ports of a LAG. RSPAN allows mirrored traffic to traverse multiple switches to a remote monitoring port, which is useful in distributed networks .

3. Traffic Mirroring on Virtual Switches

In virtualized environments, traffic from aggregated ports can be mirrored using promiscuous mode on ESXi or Hyper-V vSwitches. This allows monitoring of virtual machines connected to LAGs without impacting production traffic .

Best Practices

  • Ensure all aggregated ports have identical configurations to avoid traffic loss or misalignment during monitoring .
  • Use dedicated monitoring ports or TAP aggregation switches to prevent interference with production traffic .
  • Apply ACLs or filters on TAP aggregation switches to capture only relevant traffic, reducing bandwidth usage and analysis overhead .
  • For OT or industrial networks, mirror only RX traffic for broadcast/multicast-heavy environments to avoid unnecessary duplication .
  • Regularly verify LACP status and port health to ensure monitoring captures all active links in the aggregation group . By combining port aggregation with TAP or SPAN monitoring, network administrators can efficiently capture and analyze traffic from multiple physical links, maintain redundancy, and ensure high visibility into network performance and security.
