An optical power meter can measure green light by using a photodiode sensor calibrated for the green wavelength range, typically around 520–570 nm.

How Optical Power Meters Work

An optical power meter (OPM) measures the power of light by converting incident photons into an electrical signal using a photodiode sensor or other detector types, then amplifying and displaying the result in units such as watts or dBm . The sensor's response is wavelength-dependent, so the meter must be set or calibrated for the specific wavelength of the light being measured . For green light, this means the OPM should either have a broadband sensor covering 520–570 nm or a sensor specifically optimized for green wavelengths .

Sensor Types Suitable for Green Light

  • Silicon (Si) photodiodes: Ideal for visible light, including green, with high sensitivity in the 400–1100 nm range. They are suitable for low to moderate power levels, from nanowatts to tens of milliwatts .
  • Thermopile sensors: Can measure higher power levels and are wavelength-independent, but less sensitive than photodiodes for low-power green light .

Calibration and Accuracy

To ensure accurate measurements, the OPM must be calibrated at the green wavelength. Calibration accounts for the sensor's spectral response and ensures that the displayed power reflects the true optical power of the green light . Using a meter calibrated for a different wavelength can result in significant errors. Some advanced meters allow automatic wavelength selection or multi-wavelength measurement, which can simplify green light testing .

Applications of Green Light Measurement

  • Fiber optic testing: Green lasers or LEDs may be used in specialized fiber systems or lab experiments. The OPM measures insertion loss, output power, or system efficiency .
  • Laser characterization: Measuring the output power of green laser diodes or solid-state lasers.
  • Optical experiments: In research or educational setups, green light power measurement is essential for photonics experiments.

Practical Considerations

  • Ensure the beam size matches the sensor's active area; some OPMs require focusing optics for small or divergent green beams .
  • Avoid spurious wavelengths in the light source, as they can affect readings if the meter is not wavelength-specific .
  • Handheld meters are convenient for field use, while benchtop meters provide higher accuracy and stability for lab measurements .

By selecting a Si photodiode-based OPM calibrated for green light, users can reliably measure optical power in the 520–570 nm range for both fiber optic and free-space applications.
