What is Fiber Splicing?

Fiber splicing is used to connect two separate fiber optic cables, either to extend cable length, repair damaged fibers, or join different types of fiber cables. Unlike termination or connectorization, splicing provides a permanent or semi-permanent connection with lower light loss (attenuation) and back reflection, making it the preferred method for high-performance networks .

Types of Fiber Splicing

1. Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing involves melting the ends of two fibers using an electric arc to form a single, continuous fiber. This method requires a fusion splicer machine that precisely aligns the fiber cores before fusing. Key characteristics include:

  • Minimal back reflection
  • Permanent and highly durable connection

2. Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing does not melt the fibers. Instead, it aligns the fiber ends in a mechanical fixture using an index-matching gel or fluid to reduce light loss. Features include:

  • Slightly higher insertion loss (typically 0.1–0.5 dB)
  • Quick and simple to perform
  • Can be permanent or re-enterable
  • Suitable for rapid repairs or installations where fusion splicing equipment is unavailable
