Laying Method

A standard method for laying temperature-measuring optical cables involves several key steps:

  1. Connection and Routing: The optical cable is connected to the monitoring host (e.g., in a substation) and routed along the cable to be monitored, extending close to its surface .
  2. Relay Laying: For long runs, relay sections are created every 100 meters to maintain signal integrity and facilitate monitoring .
  3. Fixing the Cable: The optical fiber is secured to the cable surface using nylon cable ties or clamps at intervals of 1–2 meters. Zigzag patterns may be used in certain sections, with additional fixtures to ensure tight attachment .
  4. Allowance Sections: Sections of extra cable length are provided every 500 meters, at environmental transitions, or when the optical cable moves from one cable to another. This prevents tension and ensures reliable measurements .

Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) Technologies

Modern systems use distributed optical fiber sensing to measure temperature continuously along the cable length:

  • Brillouin or Raman scattering is used to detect temperature changes by analyzing frequency shifts in backscattered light .
  • Brillouin OTDR (B-OTDR) allows simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature, helping identify bends, splices, or abnormal events along the fiber .
  • Systems like GaAs fiber optic sensors provide high precision, electromagnetic immunity, and can be embedded in tight spaces such as transformer windings or GIS equipment .

  • Ensure proper tension and slack in the fiber to prevent breakage.
  • Use environmentally resistant materials for fixing, especially in outdoor or high-voltage environments.
  • Calibrate the system according to the fiber type and environmental conditions to maintain measurement accuracy .
  • Regularly inspect and maintain the fiber path to prevent damage from mechanical stress or environmental factors. By following these methods and using advanced distributed sensing technologies, temperature-measuring optical cables can provide reliable, real-time monitoring for power cables, transformers, and other critical industrial equipment.
