Monitoring in optical networks is primarily achieved through DDM/DOM-enabled optical modules, which allow network devices to track the health and performance of transceivers in real time. These modules expose internal parameters such as temperature, supply voltage, transmitted and received optical power, and laser bias current, enabling predictive maintenance and early detection of potential failures (SFF-8472 standard) .
How Monitoring Works
Inside a DDM/DOM optical module, the Transmitter Optical Subassembly (TOSA) emits light, while the Receiver Optical Subassembly (ROSA) detects incoming signals. A monitoring photodiode within the TOSA measures the transmitted optical power, and the module communicates this data to the host device via an I²C interface or EEPROM. This allows switches, routers, or servers to continuously assess the module's operational status without physical inspection .
