The flexibility of the cable material largely determines how tight the bend can be.

Calculation Method

  1. Determine Cable Diameter: Measure the cable's overall outside diameter (OD) or obtain it from the manufacturer .

  2. Apply Bending Factor: Multiply the OD by a factor (K) depending on cable type:

    • Single-core power cables: K = 12–15
    • Multicore power cables: K = 10
    • Control or instrumentation cables: K = 8
    • Shielded cables may require larger factors to prevent damage .

    Formula: R = K × D, where R is the minimum bending radius, D is the cable diameter, and K is the multiplier.

  3. Select Standard Tray Radius: Choose a cable tray bend radius equal to or greater than the calculated minimum. Common standard tray radii are 300 mm, 450 mm, 600 mm, and 900 mm .

  • Always use the largest cable diameter in the tray for calculations to ensure all cables are safely accommodated .
  • For 90-degree bends, ensure the tray's internal radius meets or exceeds the minimum bending radius to avoid over-stressing the cables .
  • When installing in trays, ducts, or around corners, maintain smooth curvature and avoid sharp angles to prevent mechanical damage .
  • Factors affecting bending radius include cable construction, insulation type, and whether the cable is shielded or unshielded .

Example

For a multicore cable with an OD of 25 mm:

  • Minimum bending radius: R = 10 × 25 mm = 250 mm
  • Standard tray selection: next higher standard radius = 300 mm This ensures safe installation without exceeding the cable's mechanical limits . By following these guidelines, you can ensure that cables in trays are installed safely, maintain electrical integrity, and comply with industry standards.
