Overview of Protective Relays

Relays do not interrupt current directly; instead, they send a trip signal to circuit breakers or other interrupting devices to isolate the faulted section . The relay acts as the decision-making element, while the breaker performs the actual current interruption.

Working Principle

Protective relays operate by continuously monitoring electrical quantities through instrument transformers (current transformers and voltage transformers). When a measured parameter exceeds a preset pickup value, the relay logic determines whether to:

  • Trip a breaker to isolate the fault
  • Send an alarm to operators
  • Block or initiate other protection functions The relay's operation depends on several factors, including pickup settings, time delays, breaker clearing time, and coordination with upstream and downstream devices . The decision chain involves sensing → relay logic → trip output → breaker operation → isolation, and any weakness in this chain can compromise protection .

Types of Protective Relays

Protective relays can be classified based on mechanism or function:

  • Mechanism-based: Electromechanical, static, or digital/numerical relays
  • Function-based: Overcurrent, differential, distance, voltage, frequency, or multifunction relays Electromechanical relays use coils and moving contacts, while numerical relays use microprocessors to perform multiple protection functions with higher accuracy and flexibility .

Relay Signaling

Relay signaling refers to the communication of relay status or fault conditions to operators or other devices. This can include:

  • Trip signals to circuit breakers
  • Alarm signals for abnormal conditions
  • Interlocking or blocking signals to coordinate protection schemes Signaling ensures selectivity, meaning only the faulted section is isolated while the rest of the system continues operating, minimizing outages and maintaining system stability .
