Connecting the optical module and router

To connect a fiber optic line to a router, use an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) or compatible optical module to convert light signals into electrical signals, then link it to your router via Ethernet or SFP ports.

Using an Optical Network Terminal (ONT)

Most residential fiber setups require an ONT, which converts the incoming optical signal into an electrical signal your router can interpret. The steps are:

1. Locate the fiber entry point in your home, usually a wall outlet installed by your ISP.
2. Connect the fiber optic cable to the ONT's optical port. Remove dust caps from both the cable and ONT port, align the connector, and push until it clicks. Handle the fiber by its plastic housing to avoid damage or contamination.
3. Power on the ONT and wait for the status lights to stabilize. A solid green PON or Optical light indicates a successful connection.
4. Bridge the ONT to your router using a high-quality Ethernet cable (Cat6a or higher). Plug one end into the ONT's LAN/Ethernet port and the other into the router's WAN port.
5. Power on the router and verify that the WAN light is active. Access the router's admin panel to configure ISP credentials if required .

Connecting Optical Modules Directly to Routers

Some routers support SFP or fiber-ready ports, allowing direct connection of optical modules:

1. Insert the optical module into the router's optical interface until it clicks. If it doesn't fit, rotate 180 degrees and try again.
2. Remove dust plugs from the module and fiber connectors.
3. Label the fibers temporarily to identify transmit (TX) and receive (RX) ends. Connect the fiber ends to the corresponding TX/RX ports on the module and remote device.
4. Replace temporary labels with permanent ones after installation. Ensure fibers are not reversed, as incorrect connections prevent data transmission .

Best Practices

• Placement: Keep the ONT and router near power outlets, in a dry, ventilated area, and ideally protected by a surge suppressor.
• Handling fibers: Avoid bending fibers beyond their minimum bend radius and keep connectors clean.
• Testing: Use visual fault locators or network testing tools to verify signal integrity and performance.
