Standard 12-Color Sequence

The TIA-598-C standard defines a 12-color sequence for individual fibers:

Extended and Non-Standard Sequences

Non-standard or high-density cables may use extended sequences to accommodate more fibers or specific regional standards:

• 16-Fiber MPO Connectors / European Standards (DIN):
  • 13: Olive
  • 14: Magenta
  • 15: Tan
  • 16: Lime This sequence is applied after the standard 12 colors and is common in high-density ribbon cables .
• High-Count Cables (>12 Fibers): Multi-tube cables use a “Tube and Fiber” system:
  • Each buffer tube is assigned a color from the 12-color sequence.
  • Individual fibers inside the tube follow the same 12-color sequence. Example: Fiber #34 in a 144-fiber cable is the Violet fiber inside the Green tube .

Custom Jacket Colors

For non-standard or OEM cables, outer jacket colors can be customized to indicate fiber type, mode, or project-specific classification:

• Yellow: Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2)
• Orange: Multimode fiber (OM1/OM2)
• Aqua: OM3/OM4 multimode fiber
• Custom RAL colors or printed legends can be used for in-building distribution, interconnect cords, or breakout cables .

Practical Tips for Non-Standard Cables

1. Check the printed legend on outdoor or custom cables, as jacket color alone may not indicate fiber type .
2. Use tube/fiber mapping for high-count cables to avoid misidentification.
3. Connector color coding should match fiber type and polish (e.g., green for APC, blue for UPC) to prevent signal loss or damage .
4. Document custom sequences clearly in network diagrams to ensure consistent maintenance and troubleshooting . By following these guidelines, technicians can reliably identify fibers in non-standard optical cables, maintain compatibility, and reduce installation errors.
