The core of an optical fiber is the central region that guides light, usually made of glass or plastic with a slightly higher refractive index than the surrounding cladding . In single-mode fibers, the core is very small, while multimode fibers have larger cores to accommodate multiple light paths . The refractive index profile can be step-index (uniform core) or graded-index (parabolic variation), affecting light propagation and modal dispersion .

Core Positioning
