Fiber Optic Cable Termination and Splicing Procedure

Fiber optic cables can be terminated using connectors for removable connections or spliced for permanent joints, with fusion and mechanical splicing being the primary methods.

Fiber Termination Overview

Fiber termination is the process of preparing the end of a fiber optic cable to connect to another fiber, device, or network. Proper termination ensures low signal loss, minimal back reflection, and high mechanical strength. There are two main approaches:

  1. Connectors – provide removable, reusable connections for flexibility and frequent reconfiguration.
  2. Splices – create permanent joints between fibers, offering the lowest signal loss and highest durability .

Fiber Connectors

Connectors are widely used in data centers, network installations, and optical distribution frames (ODFs). Key points include:

  • Types of Connectors: LC (Lucent Connector) for high-density environments, SC (Subscriber Connector) with push-pull design, ST, FC, and APC (Angled Physical Contact) for singlemode systems .
  • Ferrules: Ceramic ferrules hold and align fibers precisely, reducing insertion loss and back reflection .
  • Polish Types: PC (Physical Contact), UPC (Ultra Physical Contact), and APC (Angled PC) improve optical performance, with APC minimizing reflected light in sensitive singlemode systems .
  • Applications: Connectors are ideal for environments requiring frequent changes or testing, such as patch panels and active equipment connections .

Fiber Splicing

Splicing permanently joins two fibers end-to-end. There are two main methods:

1. Fusion Splicing

  • Uses an electric arc to fuse fibers together.
  • Offers lowest signal loss (~0.1 dB) and high durability.
  • Ideal for long-distance or high-bandwidth applications.
  • Requires specialized equipment and is not easily reversible .

2. Mechanical Splicing

  • Fibers are aligned in a mechanical fixture with gel or adhesive.
  • Easier and faster than fusion splicing but has slightly higher signal loss.
  • Suitable for field repairs or temporary connections .

Fiber Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail is a short fiber with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other. The bare end is spliced to the incoming cable, while the connector plugs into equipment or patch panels. Pigtails combine the precision of factory connectors with the flexibility of field splicing .

Best Practices

  • Singlemode vs. Multimode: Ensure the connector or splice type matches the fiber type.
  • Cleanliness: Dirt or scratches on fiber ends can increase loss and back reflection.
  • Testing: Verify insertion loss and return loss after termination to ensure network performance.
  • Environmental Protection: Use splice trays, enclosures, or protective boots to safeguard terminations .

Summary

  • Connectors: Removable, flexible, suitable for frequent reconfiguration.
  • Fusion Splicing: Permanent, low-loss, high-durability, ideal for long runs.
  • Mechanical Splicing: Quick, field-friendly, slightly higher loss.
  • Pigtails: Combine factory precision with field splicing flexibility. Choosing the right termination or splicing method depends on network requirements, fiber type, installation environment, and long-term maintenance considerations .
