An access switch is a network edge device that connects end-user devices to the broader network, while other devices like distribution and core switches, routers, and gateways manage traffic aggregation, routing, and inter-network communication.

Access Switches

Access switches operate at the network edge, directly connecting devices such as computers, IP phones, wireless access points, cameras, and IoT devices to the network . They typically provide high port density, Power over Ethernet (PoE), and VLAN management, forwarding traffic upstream to distribution or core layers . Access switches are crucial for network access, security at the edge, and local traffic handling, serving as the first point of contact for end-user devices .

Distribution Switches

Distribution switches sit between access and core layers, aggregating traffic from multiple access switches . They often operate at Layer 3, enabling inter-VLAN routing, policy enforcement (QoS, ACLs), and traffic management to prevent congestion . These switches provide higher reliability and performance than access switches and act as intermediaries to ensure efficient data flow to the core layer .

Core Switches

Core switches form the high-speed backbone of a network, connecting distribution switches and handling large volumes of traffic with minimal latency . They are optimized for speed, scalability, and fault tolerance, ensuring that data moves efficiently across the network's central infrastructure .

Other Network Devices

  • Hub: A basic device that broadcasts incoming signals to all ports, now largely obsolete due to high collision rates .
  • Repeater: Extends network range by amplifying weak signals over long distances .
  • Router: Connects multiple networks, directing data packets using IP addresses and maintaining routing tables .
  • Gateway: Acts as an entry/exit point between networks with different protocols, translating data for compatibility .
  • Brouter: Combines bridge and router functions, handling both known and unknown protocols, though rarely used today .
  • Modem: Converts digital signals to analog for internet connectivity via telephone, cable, or fiber lines .
