The role of single-mode fiber fusion splicing

Single-mode fibers are typically spliced using fusion splicing with core alignment techniques, often in a dedicated single-mode splice mode.

Overview

Single-mode (SM) fibers have a very small core diameter, usually 8–10 microns, which makes precise alignment critical to minimize insertion loss and back reflection during splicing . Fusion splicing is the preferred method for single-mode fibers because it permanently welds the fiber ends together using an electric arc, producing very low loss (often below 0.05 dB) and a strong, reliable joint .

Alignment Techniques

For single-mode fibers, core alignment (three-axis alignment) is the most widely used method. This technique aligns the fiber cores precisely rather than just the cladding, which is essential due to the small mode-field diameter of SM fibers . Other alignment methods include:

  • Active V-groove splicers: Movable V-grooves provide precise fiber alignment suitable for SM fibers and FTTx applications .
  • Profile alignment systems: Use collimated light to image the fiber cores and automatically align them before fusing .
  • Local Injection and Detection (LID) systems: Inject light at the splice point and detect output to optimize alignment .

Splice Modes on Fusion Splicers

Modern fusion splicers often include a dedicated single-mode (SM) splice mode, which automatically adjusts parameters such as arc power, heating time, and alignment settings to handle the delicate structure of SM fibers . This mode is ideal for long-distance networks, telecommunications backbones, and high-quality connections requiring minimal signal loss. Other modes include Auto, Manual, and Multimode, but for SM fibers, the single-mode mode ensures optimal performance .

Summary

  • Method: Fusion splicing
  • Alignment: Core alignment (three-axis)
  • Splice mode: Single-mode (SM) mode on the splicer
  • Typical loss: Below 0.05 dB for high-quality splices
  • Applications: Long-distance telecom, FTTx, data centers, and high-speed networks Using fusion splicing with core alignment and the single-mode splice mode ensures minimal signal loss and reliable performance for single-mode fiber networks.
