5G cellular networks can serve as a high-speed alternative to fiber for last-mile connectivity. However, 5G still relies on fiber for backhaul infrastructure, so it often complements rather than fully replaces fiber .

Semiconductor Fiber Technology

Emerging semiconductor-based optical fibers aim to combine the advantages of electrical conductors and traditional fiber optics. These fibers could reduce costs, simplify integration with electronics, and maintain high-speed, low-EMI transmission, potentially replacing both fiber and copper in future networks. While still in development, this technology promises faster, more efficient communication at the circuit and network level .
