Proper installation of fiber optic sensors is critical, as poor handling can compromise performance. Common issues include improper bonding, excessive bending, and exposure to mechanical stress, which can distort readings and reduce sensor lifespan. Precise placement is especially important in structural health monitoring, aerospace, and civil infrastructure applications, where even minor misalignment can lead to inaccurate measurements. Using experienced technicians and following strict installation guidelines, including surface preparation and compatible adhesives, is essential to mitigate these problems .

Environmental Sensitivity

Fiber optic sensors, while resistant to electromagnetic interference, can be affected by temperature fluctuations, humidity, chemical exposure, and mechanical stress. Different applications impose unique challenges. In aerospace or energy sectors, spatial resolution, sensing length, and sampling frequency must be carefully matched to the application to avoid compromised results . The initial cost of fiber optic sensors is often higher than traditional sensors, which can deter adoption. Integration with existing systems can also be complex, requiring careful planning to ensure compatibility. However, the long-term benefits, including durability, reduced maintenance, and high sensitivity, often justify the investment .

Sensor-Specific Technical Limitations

Different fiber optic sensor types, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), chirped FBGs, and interferometers, have inherent limitations. For example, FBGs may have restricted wavelength ranges and bandwidth limitations, while interferometric sensors can be sensitive to environmental noise.
