Optical Power Meter Test Jumper

Use the one-jumper reference method to measure jumper loss accurately with an optical power meter.

Step 1: Prepare Your Equipment

  • Clean all connectors using lint-free wipes or click-to-clean tools to prevent dust from affecting measurements .
  • Select the correct wavelength on your optical power meter to match the signal you are testing .
  • Ensure you have a high-quality launch reference jumper of the same fiber type and connector style as the jumper under test .

Step 2: Set the Reference

  • Connect the launch reference jumper directly from the optical light source (OLS) to the optical power meter (OPM) .
  • Zero out or reference the power meter to establish a baseline power level. This step ensures the meter ignores the loss from the reference jumper itself .
  • Keep the launch cord connected to the light source; do not disconnect it after referencing .

Step 3: Connect the Jumper Under Test

  • Attach a mating adapter to the end of the reference jumper connected to the OPM .
  • Connect this setup to the first connector of the jumper under test.
  • At the far end, connect the second connector of the jumper to the power meter.

Step 4: Measure Insertion Loss

  • The reading on the OPM now shows the total insertion loss of the jumper, including both connectors and the fiber itself .
  • For multimode jumpers, use a mandrel wrap if required to ensure accurate readings .
  • Typical acceptable loss values are ≤0.5 dB per connector; if higher, clean connectors or replace adapters .

Step 5: Verify and Record

  • Repeat measurements if necessary to ensure consistency.
  • Record the measured loss in dB for documentation and compliance with industry standards .
  • Always handle jumpers carefully to avoid bending or damaging the fiber, which can affect readings.

  • Use lab-grade reference jumpers to minimize measurement errors .
  • Regularly calibrate your optical power meter to maintain accuracy .
  • Avoid removing the launch reference cord after referencing, as this requires resetting the reference .
  • Always verify that the connector types and fiber types match between the test setup and the jumper under test . By following these steps, you can accurately test fiber optic jumpers and ensure reliable insertion loss measurements for your optical network.
