Cable tray installation span requirements

Cable tray support spans typically range from 1.5 to 6 feet for standard installations, depending on tray type, load, and environment.

General Guidelines

The support span is the distance between structural supports for a cable tray. Proper spacing ensures the tray can safely carry the weight of cables and resist environmental loads like wind or snow. For short-span indoor installations, supports are usually placed every 6 to 8 feet, while intermediate spans are supported every 10 to 12 feet. Long-span trays may have supports every 14 to 20 feet, and extra-long spans can exceed 20 feet, often used for outdoor crossings or to reduce the number of supports .

NEC and NEMA Recommendations

  • The National Electrical Code (NEC) specifies that cable trays must be supported at intervals recommended by the manufacturer, but generally not more than 5 feet for horizontal runs. Ideal run lengths between supports are 4 to 6 feet for ladder-type trays .
  • NEMA VE-1 and VE-2 standards recommend placing supports at approximately 1/4 of the tray span, which minimizes stress and deflection at splice locations .

Horizontal and Vertical Runs

  • For horizontal straight runs, typical support spans range from 1.5 to 3 meters (5 to 10 feet), allowing easy access and maintenance .
  • For vertical runs, supports should be fixed to the building structure with spacing preferably less than 2 meters (6.5 feet) .
  • At corners, bends, or T-junctions, supports should be installed on each side to maintain stability and prevent cable stress .

Additional Considerations

  • Tray type and load: Ladder trays, perforated trays, and solid-bottom trays have different load capacities, affecting support spacing.
  • Splice plates: Only one splice plate should be placed between supports, and tray length should match or exceed the support span .
  • Environmental factors: Outdoor installations may require longer spans with stronger materials to withstand wind, snow, or ice .
  • Cable management: Proper spacing reduces sagging, prevents electromagnetic interference, and allows for heat dissipation and maintenance . By following these guidelines, cable tray installations can achieve structural integrity, safety, and compliance with electrical codes, while optimizing material use and installation efficiency.
