Virtual switch technologies enable two or more physical switches to function as a single logical unit. This approach is commonly used in core and distribution layers to provide high availability, redundancy, and simplified network management. Key technologies include:

  • Cisco Virtual Switching System (VSS): Combines two Cisco switches into one logical switch using a Virtual Switch Link (VSL) for control and data plane synchronization .
  • Cisco StackWise Virtual: Pairs two Catalyst switches to operate as a single logical switch with distributed forwarding and single management plane .
  • Juniper Virtual Chassis: Connects multiple EX or QFX Series switches via Virtual Chassis Ports (VCPs) to form a single logical device .
  • Aruba Virtual Switching Extension (VSX): Allows two Aruba switches to operate as a resilient virtual system with independent control planes but synchronized data planes .

Prerequisites

Before configuring a virtual core switch, ensure the following:

  • Hardware compatibility: Switches must be of the same model and support the virtual technology being deployed .
  • Software and license alignment: All switches must run the same software version, license level, and SDM template if applicable .
  • Direct interconnection: Use dedicated links (VSL, SVL, or VCPs) for control and data synchronization .

  2. Ensure identical supervisor modules: Both switches must have the same supervisor model.
  3. Configure StackWise Virtual Link (SVL): Establish the logical connection.
  4. Synchronize MAC addresses: For Layer 3 injected packets, ensure consistent MAC address prefixes across SVIs .

Juniper Virtual Chassis

  1. Connect member switches via VCPs: Dedicated or configurable ports.
  2. Assign member IDs: Each switch receives a unique ID within the Virtual Chassis.
  3. Designate primary switch: One switch acts as the master for control plane operations.
  4. Verify connectivity and synchronization: Ensure all member switches communicate and pass control/data traffic correctly .

Aruba VSX

  1. Connect VSX pair: Use dedicated inter-switch links.
  2. Synchronize configuration: Both switches maintain independent control planes but share data plane state.
  3. Configure redundancy and failover: Ensure traffic can reroute if one switch fails .
