Safety Configuration Standards for Primary Distribution Boxes

Primary distribution boxes must be installed in dry, ventilated areas, properly grounded, equipped with protective devices, and comply with wiring and operational safety standards.

Installation and Site Requirements

Primary distribution boxes should be installed close to the power supply to minimize power loss and ensure safety, in dry, well-ventilated, and non-corrosive environments to prevent overheating and equipment damage . The installation height is typically between 1.5 and 1.8 meters from the ground for convenient operation and inspection . Boxes must be firmly fixed using appropriate brackets or screws to prevent movement due to vibration or collision . Adequate space should be provided for at least two people to work simultaneously, and obstacles or combustible materials should be avoided near the box .

Structural and Material Safety

Distribution boxes should be made of steel plates (1.2–2.0 mm thick) or flame-retardant insulating materials . Doors must be lockable, and all boxes should be clearly labeled with circuit names and purposes . Cable inlets and cover joints should be sealed properly to prevent dust, moisture, or foreign object ingress .

Electrical Safety Parameters

  • Grounding: The metal casing, electrical installation board, and internal appliances must be reliably grounded .
  • Protective Devices: Install leakage protectors in the main and sub-distribution boxes. Typical settings include 50–100 mA for main boxes and ≤30 mA for sub-boxes, with shorter action times in wet environments .
  • Circuit Protection: Switches must provide short-circuit and overload protection, with rated values matching the load .
  • Wiring Standards: Use high-temperature resistant copper wires with cross-sectional areas suitable for the load. Wiring should be tidy, numbered, and insulated, avoiding exposed conductors .

Operational Safety

  • Only certified electricians should install or maintain distribution boxes .
  • Insulation resistance testing should be performed by at least two operators to prevent electric shock .
  • Power should be disconnected and locked when the site is unattended for extended periods .
  • Power and lighting circuits should be separated or clearly segregated within the box to prevent interference .

Compliance and Standards

Primary distribution boxes should follow recognized safety standards such as IEC 61439 for low-voltage switchgear, ensuring proper insulation, fault protection, and grounding . Using high-quality materials and durable components enhances safety and prolongs service life. Smart PDUs with real-time monitoring and alarms can further improve operational safety by detecting faults before they escalate . By adhering to these parameters, primary distribution boxes can operate safely, protect personnel, and ensure reliable power distribution.
