Greece is rapidly expanding its subsea optical fiber infrastructure with ARTEMIS, ANDROMEDA, and Thetis Express, enhancing regional connectivity and establishing the country as a strategic digital hub...
The ARTEMIS project, led by Grid Telecom (a subsidiary of IPTO), is an ultra-high-capacity subsea optical fiber system connecting Crete with mainland Greece. Spanning approximately 280 km, including terrestrial segments, ARTEMIS will interconnect all landing stations and data centers in Crete and the Attica region. The system features subsea repeaters and supports up to 30 Tbps per fiber-pair, with a minimum of 24 fiber-pairs, delivering a total design capacity of 720 Tbps, potentially exceeding 1 petabit per second, making it the first petabit-class subsea cable in Greece and the Mediterranean . ARTEMIS is engineered to support next-generation technologies and aims to transform Crete into a strategic digital hub .
The ANDROMEDA system is a transcontinental subsea optical fiber cable connecting Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, with extensions to the Arabian Peninsula. Developed jointly by Grid Telecom and Tamares Telecom, ANDROMEDA is designed to create a low-latency telecommunications corridor between Europe and the Middle East. It leverages Greece's strategic location to provide carrier-neutral, open-access connectivity, integrating IPTO's domestic network with international fiber links. The system enhances network diversity, security, and low-latency data transport, supporting Greece's role as a regional digital and energy hub .
Vodafone's Thetis Express is a 340 km subsea cable linking Crete and Athens, connecting to the 2Africa cable network. With a total design capacity of 180 Tbps, it can support massive data traffic, equivalent to 25 million simultaneous 4K video streams. The cable uses a two-segment marine route via Milos and integrates terrestrial connections, enhancing resilience and regional capacity. Thetis Express positions Greece as a key transit point in the digital corridor between Europe, Africa, and Asia, complementing existing infrastructure .
Collectively, these projects significantly strengthen Greece's digital infrastructure, providing high-capacity, low-latency connectivity for domestic and international traffic. They support the country's geopolitical footprint, facilitate digital transformation, and establish Greece as a strategic hub linking Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. The combination of ARTEMIS, ANDROMEDA, and Thetis Express ensures network reliability, flexibility, and diversity, while enabling Greece to meet medium- and long-term digital infrastructure demands .
