Frequency modulation in fiber optic sensors relies on converting physical changes into variations in the light frequency, often using the Doppler effect, to achieve high-sensitivity measurements of vi...
Frequency modulation (FM) fiber optic sensors are a type of intrinsic sensor where the sensing occurs within the optical fiber itself. Unlike intensity-based sensors, which measure changes in light amplitude, FM sensors detect shifts in the frequency of light caused by external physical effects such as vibration, strain, or temperature changes . This approach reduces sensitivity to optical losses and improves measurement accuracy over long distances.
The core principle of FM fiber optic sensors is based on the Doppler effect. When a fiber or a microstructure attached to the fiber vibrates or moves, it induces a modulation in the frequency of the light propagating through the fiber. The frequency shift is proportional to the velocity or displacement of the vibrating element. In some designs, optically self-resonant micro-beam oscillators are used, where the vibration of the microstructure modulates the carrier frequency of the light . Other mechanisms that can induce frequency modulation include luminescence and Raman scattering, where interactions with the fiber material or embedded defects alter the light frequency under specific conditions . The modulated light is then transmitted to a remote detector, where FM demodulation techniques extract the physical parameter of interest, such as vibration amplitude or temperature.
FM fiber optic sensors often combine temperature and vibration sensing in a single device. By designing acceleration-sensitive microstructures and using low-noise laser sources, these sensors can provide high-performance measurements in delicate or harsh environments . Special fibers, such as polarization-maintaining fibers, can enhance sensitivity and selectivity by exploiting birefringence or Faraday rotation effects for magnetic field sensing . Applications of FM fiber optic sensors include:
