The total length of optical cable laid is calculated by summing the measured route segments, adding slack for bends, terminations, splices, and service loops, and accounting for excess length due to stranding.

Step 1: Measure the Route

Start by measuring the entire cable pathway. Break the route into segments such as tray runs, conduit sections, risers, underground ducts, vertical drops, and cabinet entry paths. Multiply each segment by its quantity if repeated, then sum all segments to get the base length. This structured approach ensures no offsets or pathway changes are missed during planning and installation .

Step 2: Add Slack and Buffers

Include slack for:

  • Termination points: Typically 1–3 meters per end to protect connectors and allow re-termination .
  • Splices: Slack staged in closures to allow re-entry without stressing fibers .
  • Pull points and service loops: Extra length to accommodate bends, alignment changes, and future maintenance .
  • Installation adjustments: Add 10–20% buffer for bends, elevation changes, and unforeseen adjustments .

Step 3: Account for Stranding in Loose Tube Cables

For stranded loose tube fiber optic cables, the fiber inside the tube is slightly longer than the cable core due to helical stranding. The excess fiber length can be calculated using the stranding radius (R) and lay length (pitch) with a Pythagorean approach:

Excess Length Factor=(2πR)2+(Lay Length)2/Lay Length

Multiply the base fiber length by this factor to account for the extra length introduced by the spiral stranding .

Step 4: Verify and Adjust

  • Check drawings and installation plans for critical links.
  • Include reserved pathways for firestopping or future expansions.
  • Round up to the nearest reel size if ordering cable, considering reel length and waste factor .
