Classification and Applications of Fiber Optic Sensing

Fiber optic sensors are classified into intrinsic, extrinsic, and hybrid types, with applications spanning structural health monitoring, biomedical sensing, environmental monitoring, and industrial process control.

Classification of Fiber Optic Sensors

1. Intrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors Intrinsic sensors integrate the sensing element directly into the optical fiber. The measurand (physical, chemical, or biological quantity) directly affects the light traveling through the fiber, altering its intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength. The fiber itself acts as both the transmission medium and the sensing element, enabling high sensitivity and distributed sensing over long distances . 2. Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors Extrinsic sensors use an external transducer to interact with the measurand. The optical fiber primarily serves to transmit light to and from the sensing element. Modulation occurs outside the fiber, which allows for selective chemical or environmental sensing where direct fiber interaction is impractical . 3. Hybrid Fiber Optic Sensors Hybrid sensors combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles. Light is transmitted through the fiber to an external sensing element and then returned, allowing for complex measurements and enhanced versatility in challenging environments .

Applications of Fiber Optic Sensing

1. Structural Health Monitoring Fiber optic sensors are widely used to monitor bridges, buildings, pipelines, and aerospace structures. They provide real-time data on strain, stress, vibration, and temperature, enabling predictive maintenance and safety assurance . 2.
