  • Bare Splitter: Use a fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit to join the input and output fibers to the splitter. Ensure a clean, dust-free environment to prevent contamination and signal degradation .

Step 5: Placement and Mounting

Install the splitter in a fiber splice closure, distribution box, or wall-mounted terminal box. For FTTH networks, primary splitters are often placed in central office rooms or optical transfer boxes, while secondary splitters may be installed closer to user premises .

After installation, test the splitter using an optical power meter or OTDR:

  • Optical Power Test: Ensure the input minus output power is within the nominal splitter loss (e.g., 1:8 PLC splitter ≈ 10.7 dB).

  • Troubleshoot by cleaning connectors, checking bend radius, and verifying secure connections if results are outside specifications .

Step 7: Maintenance

Regularly inspect the splitter and fiber connections. Use optical power meters to check 10% of ports quarterly and perform full-link OTDR testing annually to ensure network reliability .
