Keep connectors covered with PVC caps when not in use to prevent contamination .

Fiber Preparation

  1. Remove the outer jacket of the fiber cable to expose the strength members (usually Kevlar) using separator scissors, leaving 6–8 mm protruding .
  2. Strip the buffer coating from the fiber using a no-nik tool, removing at least 16 mm in multiple steps to avoid fiber damage .
  3. Clean the fiber with lint-free wipes to remove any debris or oils from the cladding surface .
  4. Cleaving: Use an optical fiber cleaver to create a precise, flat end on the fiber, which is critical for low-loss splicing .

Splicing Procedure

  1. Secure the fibers in the splicer tray or organizer and select the appropriate splice mode on the fusion splicer .
  2. Align the fibers in the V-grooves of the splicer, ensuring proper cleave length and positioning according to the splicer's instructions .
  3. Initial arc fusion: The splicer generates a short arc to bring the fiber ends together and measure the cleave angle .
  4. Core and cladding alignment: The splicer performs precise alignment to minimize insertion loss and back reflection .
  5. Final fusion: A high-voltage arc fuses the fibers together, and the splicer calculates the estimated splice loss .

Testing the Splice

  1. Visual Inspection: Use a VFL to check for light leakage and confirm continuity .
  2. Insertion Loss Measurement: Measure the optical power before and after the splice to quantify loss, typically using an optical power meter and light source .
  3. OTDR Testing: For long cable runs with multiple splices, use an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer to verify each splice's quality and locate any faults .
  4. Certification: Ensure the splice meets the required industry standards and customer specifications for insertion loss and reflectance .

  • Maintain splicing tools and cleaver in clean condition to ensure consistent results .
