Cold connectors (fast connectors) allow quick, epoxy-free fiber optic connections using mechanical splicing.

Required Tools and Materials

Before starting, gather the following tools and materials: fiber stripping tool, fiber cleaver, optical power meter, visual fault locator, alcohol swabs, and the fast connectors themselves .

Step 1: Fiber Preparation

  1. Strip the Fiber: Use a fiber stripping tool to remove the protective coating without damaging the fiber. Ensure the bare fiber is clean and evenly exposed .
  2. Clean the Fiber: Wipe the stripped fiber with an alcohol swab to remove any debris or residue .

Step 2: Fiber Cleaving

  1. Cleave the Fiber: Use a calibrated fiber cleaver to cut the fiber cleanly and evenly. A smooth cleave is essential for proper mechanical splicing .
  2. Check the Cleave: Inspect the fiber end to ensure it is flat and free of chips or cracks.
