PE protection for the distribution box

Protective Earth (PE) conductors ensure safety by connecting all exposed conductive parts of a distribution box to the main earthing system, preventing electric shock and enabling proper operation of protective devices.

• No Switching Devices: PE circuits must remain continuous; switches or circuit breakers should not interrupt the PE path, except in plug-and-socket connections where the PE is disconnected together with the phase and neutral .
• Avoid Ferro-Magnetic Materials: PE conductors should not pass through magnetic materials that could increase impedance and reduce fault current effectiveness .

Sizing of PE Conductors

The cross-sectional area (c.s.a.) of PE conductors depends on the size of the phase conductors and the installation type:

• For phase conductors ≤16 mm²: PE = same as phase conductor
• For phase conductors 16–35 mm²: PE = 16 mm²
• For phase conductors >35 mm²: PE = half the phase conductor size
• PEN conductors (combined protective and neutral) must meet minimum sizes: 10 mm² copper or 16 mm² aluminum . These sizing rules ensure that the PE conductor can safely carry fault currents without overheating and allow protective devices to operate correctly .

Additional Considerations

• Equipotential Bonding: PE conductors also connect extraneous conductive parts (metallic enclosures, structural steel, conductive floors) to the main earthing system to prevent potential differences that could cause electric shock .
• Material and Routing: Use metallic conduits, trays, or ducts for PE conductors where possible, and avoid routing through areas with high electromagnetic interference .
• Compliance: Follow IEC 60364 standards and local regulations for installation, testing, and maintenance of PE conductors .
