Wiring Method of Optocoupler Module

To wire an optocoupler module like the PC817, connect the input signal through a current-limiting resistor to the LED side, and connect the output side to your load or microcontroller, keeping input and output grounds isolated unless a jumper is used.

Input Side Wiring

The input side of the optocoupler contains an infrared LED. To operate correctly:

  • Connect the anode (+) of the LED to the positive voltage of your input signal.
  • Connect the cathode (-) to the input ground or signal source.
  • Include a current-limiting resistor in series to ensure the LED receives the correct forward current (typically 10–20 mA for PC817) without damage .
  • When the input signal is active (HIGH or LOW depending on module type), current flows through the LED, emitting infrared light that triggers the phototransistor on the output side .

Output Side Wiring

The output side usually contains a phototransistor in an open-collector configuration:

  • Connect the collector to the positive voltage of your output circuit (VCC) through a pull-up resistor if not already included on the module.
  • Connect the emitter to the output ground.
  • The output will be active LOW when the input LED is on, meaning the phototransistor conducts and pulls the output to ground .
  • Some modules include a jumper to optionally connect input and output grounds. Remove the jumper for full galvanic isolation between circuits .

Practical Example with Arduino

  • Input: 12V signal from a separate circuit.
  • Connect the 12V through a resistor to the LED input of the PC817 module.
  • Output: Connect the collector to Arduino 5V through a pull-up resistor (if not on-board) and the emitter to Arduino GND.
  • When the 12V input is active, the Arduino reads a LOW signal on the input pin, which can be programmed to detect the circuit state .

Key Considerations

  • Isolation: Never connect input and output VCC/GND unless using the jumper for a specific reason; this preserves the isolation function.
  • Resistor Selection: Calculate the input resistor using R=VinVLEDIF , where VLED is the forward voltage of the LED and IF is the desired forward current.
  • Multiple Channels: Each channel on a multi-channel module is independent; wire each channel separately following the same method . By following these wiring guidelines, the optocoupler module can safely interface circuits with different voltage levels while maintaining electrical isolation.
