Telecom access switch accessing BRAS

A telecom access switch connects end users to a BRAS, which aggregates sessions, performs authentication, assigns IP addresses, and enforces traffic policies.

Role of the Access Switch

A telecom access switch, such as a DSLAM or Ethernet switch, serves as the first aggregation point for subscriber traffic. It collects data from multiple users and forwards it to the BRAS over Ethernet, ATM, or Frame Relay links. The switch may tag traffic with VLAN IDs or MPLS labels to identify individual subscribers or service types, which the BRAS uses for session management and policy enforcement .

BRAS Functions

The BRAS acts as a broadband network gateway, bridging the access network and the ISP core. Its key functions include:

  • Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA): Verifies user credentials, authorizes access to services, and tracks usage for billing or management .
  • IP Address Assignment: Allocates IPv4 or IPv6 addresses to clients, often via DHCP or PPPoE sessions .
  • Traffic Management and QoS: Implements bandwidth limits, traffic shaping, and prioritization based on user profiles or service plans .
  • Security and Policy Enforcement: Applies firewall rules, access control, and service policies to ensure secure and fair network usage .

Access Switch to BRAS Interaction

  1. Session Initiation: When a user connects, the access switch forwards the traffic to the BRAS, often encapsulated in PPPoE, PPPoA, or bridged Ethernet frames .
  2. VLAN or Subscriber Identification: The BRAS identifies users based on VLAN IDs, MPLS tags, or virtual circuit IDs provided by the access switch .
  3. Authentication: The BRAS communicates with AAA servers to authenticate the user. For campus networks, multiple BRAS devices may handle internal and external access separately, with transparent authentication between them .
  4. IP Assignment and Policy Application: After authentication, the BRAS assigns IP addresses and applies QoS or rate-limiting policies. The access switch may enforce VLAN termination or forward traffic transparently depending on the network design .

Configuration Considerations

  • Ensure VLAN IDs on the access switch match the BRAS subinterface range (1–4094) to avoid misrouting .
  • Use appropriate authentication protocols (PPPoE, IPoE, or RADIUS-based) depending on user devices and service requirements .
  • Apply QoS policies at the access switch or BRAS to control bandwidth per user or service plan .
  • Monitor BRAS sessions and maintain logs for troubleshooting, accounting, and network management . In summary, the access switch serves as the subscriber-facing aggregation point, while the BRAS provides session management, authentication, IP assignment, and traffic control, ensuring secure and efficient broadband access for end users. Proper VLAN configuration, authentication setup, and QoS enforcement are critical for seamless operation.
