Adding cable tray dimensions in Revit

In Revit, you can set cable tray dimensions by editing type properties for width, height, offset, and bend radius, and by loading or modifying fittings for custom configurations.

Setting Up Cable Tray Dimensions

  1. Select the Cable Tray Tool In Revit MEP, go to the Systems tab and select Cable Tray. You can choose between Cable Tray with Fittings or Cable Tray without Fittings depending on your project needs .
  2. Edit Type Properties Click Edit Type to access parameters such as:
    • Width and Height: Define the cross-sectional size of the tray.
    • Offset: Sets the vertical distance from a reference level.
    • Bend Radius: Determines the curvature for turns and elbows.
    • Bend Radius Multiplier: Adjusts the bend radius for specific fittings . These parameters allow you to control the overall dimensions of straight runs and ensure compatibility with other systems.
  3. Load and Configure Fittings If your project requires bends, tees, or vertical transitions, load the appropriate Cable Tray Fittings from the Revit library. Once loaded, assign them in the Edit Type dialog to match your routing preferences, including radius and type of bend .

Adding Custom Sizes

Revit comes with predefined cable tray sizes, but you can add or modify sizes:

  • Go to Electrical Settings → Cable Tray Sizes.
  • Click Add to create a new size or Modify to adjust an existing one.
  • Specify width, height, and other relevant parameters to match your design requirements .

Limitations and Workarounds

  • Side Plate Thickness: Revit allows thickness adjustments for fittings, but straight runs do not have a direct parameter for side plate thickness. If you need to display this for presentations, you can:
    • Use annotations or keynotes to indicate material thickness.
    • Create a custom family for straight runs with the desired thickness if visual accuracy is critical .
  • Parametric Adjustments: Most dimensions are parametric, so changes in type properties automatically update all instances of that tray type in the project .

Placement Tips

  • Draw cable trays like conduits, starting from a reference point and dragging along the desired path.
  • Adjust placement to avoid clashes with lights, ducts, or other systems.
  • Use vertical and horizontal fittings to navigate tight spaces or transitions along walls and ceilings . By following these steps, you can accurately model cable trays in Revit, customize dimensions for your project, and ensure that both straight runs and fittings meet your design and presentation requirements.
