How to connect the yellow pigtail of a network cable

To connect the yellow pigtail of a network cable, strip the cable, untwist the pairs, arrange the wires according to T568B (or T568A) standard, insert them into the RJ45 connector, and crimp securely.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cable Strip about 1–1.5 inches of the outer jacket from the cable using a wire stripper, exposing the twisted pairs inside. Untwist the pairs carefully and straighten them out.
  2. Identify the Yellow Pair In standard Ethernet cables, the yellow wire is usually part of the green pair (green/white-green or green) in T568B wiring. Ensure you know which pin the yellow wire corresponds to in your chosen standard.
  3. Arrange the Wires Flatten the wires and arrange them in the correct order for your wiring standard:
    • T568B: White-Orange, Orange, White-Green, Blue, White-Blue, Green, White-Brown, Brown
    • T568A: White-Green, Green, White-Orange, Blue, White-Blue, Orange, White-Brown, Brown Place the yellow wire in its correct position according to the standard you are using.
  4. Trim and Insert Cut the wires evenly, leaving about 0.5 inch exposed from the sheath. Insert the wires fully into the RJ45 connector, ensuring each wire reaches the end and the flat side of the plug faces upward with the clip down.
  5. Crimp the Connector Use a crimping tool to firmly crimp the RJ45 connector, securing all wires in place. Make sure the yellow wire is fully seated and making contact with the connector pins.
  6. Test the Cable After crimping, use a cable tester to confirm continuity and correct wiring. This ensures the yellow wire and all other pairs are properly connected and the cable will function correctly.

Additional Tips

  • Be consistent with the wiring standard on both ends for straight-through cables.
  • For crossover cables, one end uses T568A and the other T568B.
  • Untwist only as much as necessary to avoid signal interference.
  • If connecting to a keystone jack or patch panel, follow the color-coded labels for T568A or T568B. Following these steps ensures the yellow pigtail is correctly connected, maintaining proper network performance and avoiding connection issues .
