Principle of Temperature Sensing Fiber Optic Grating

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fibers measure temperature by detecting shifts in the Bragg wavelength caused by thermal changes, offering high precision, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and suitability for harsh environments.

Operating Principle

Fiber Bragg gratings are periodic variations in the refractive index along an optical fiber, which reflect specific wavelengths of light while transmitting others. The Bragg wavelength—the wavelength of peak reflectivity—shifts in response to temperature changes due to two effects: thermal expansion of the fiber and temperature-dependent changes in the refractive index. An optoelectronic interrogator sends light through the fiber and analyzes the reflected spectrum to determine the temperature. Care must be taken to isolate the grating from mechanical strain, as strain also affects the Bragg wavelength, potentially confounding temperature measurements .

Advantages

FBG-based temperature sensors provide several benefits over conventional electronic sensors:

  • Electromagnetic immunity: They are unaffected by electrical noise, making them ideal for high-voltage or industrial environments .
  • High spatial resolution: Distributed sensing techniques, such as Rayleigh backscatter, allow sub-millimeter resolution along the fiber length .
  • Multiplexing capability: Multiple FBGs can be embedded along a single fiber, enabling quasi-distributed or fully distributed temperature monitoring .
  • Harsh environment compatibility: They can be embedded in materials, mounted on battery cells, or used in explosive or high-temperature environments .

Fabrication and Recent Advances

FBGs are typically fabricated using UV-induced gratings or femtosecond laser inscription, which allows precise control over grating properties. Recent research has improved sensor sensitivity, stability, and multiplexing capabilities, expanding applications in structural health monitoring, aerospace, biomedical sensing, and energy infrastructure .

Applications

FBG temperature sensors are widely used in:

  • Industrial monitoring: Boilers, turbines, and combustion chambers for real-time temperature control .
  • Civil engineering: Structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, and pipelines .
  • Energy systems: Battery packs, nuclear reactors, and high-voltage equipment .
  • Medical and biotechnology: Continuous patient temperature monitoring and laboratory instrumentation .

Implementation Considerations

To ensure accurate temperature readings:

  • Mount the FBG loosely or embed it in a thermally conductive medium to minimize strain effects .
  • Use reference gratings or dual-grating configurations to separate temperature and strain signals .
  • Select appropriate interrogation systems (e.g., external-cavity diode lasers or broadband sources) for the desired resolution and measurement range . FBG-based fiber optic temperature sensors combine precision, robustness, and flexibility, making them a powerful tool for modern sensing applications across diverse industries.
