Standard PoE Switches

Standard PoE switches follow IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt standards, often referred to as PoE, PoE+, or PoE++ respectively . Key features include:

  • Handshake Protocol: Before supplying power, the switch communicates with the powered device (PD) to confirm compatibility, using a voltage detection range of 2.7–10.1V .
  • PoE Control Chip: Ensures only compliant devices receive power, preventing damage to non-PoE devices .
  • Safe Power Delivery: Power is supplied only after verification, making it suitable for sensitive devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points .
  • Flexible Standards: Depending on the IEEE version, standard switches can deliver different power levels, supporting a wide range of devices and deployment scenarios .

Non-Standard PoE Switches

Non-standard PoE switches, also known as passive PoE switches, do not follow IEEE standards . Characteristics include:
