Fiber Optic Communication Principles Microdisk

Fiber optic communication relies on transmitting light through optical fibers using total internal reflection, while microdisk resonators enhance signal processing and filtering in integrated photonic systems.

Principles of Fiber Optic Communication

Fiber optic communication transmits data by converting electrical signals into light pulses, which travel through an optical fiber from the transmitter to the receiver. The core principle is total internal reflection (TIR): light entering the fiber core (refractive index n₁) at angles greater than the critical angle is confined within the core by the surrounding cladding (refractive index n₂, where n₁ > n₂) and guided along the fiber length . The numerical aperture (NA) quantifies the fiber's light-gathering ability and is defined as NA = √(n₁² - n₂²), . Optical fibers support discrete propagation modes, determined by the fiber's core diameter, wavelength, and refractive indices. Single-mode fibers allow only one mode, minimizing dispersion and enabling long-distance, high-bandwidth communication, while multimode fibers support multiple modes for shorter distances . Light sources such as LEDs or laser diodes generate the optical signals, which are detected at the receiver by photodetectors that convert light back into electrical signals .

Microdisk Resonators in Optical Communication

A microdisk resonator is a compact, circular optical cavity that traps light via whispering gallery modes (WGMs), where light circulates along the disk's periphery due to total internal reflection. These resonators are highly sensitive to wavelength and can be used for:

  • Filtering specific wavelengths in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems.
  • Modulating or switching signals in integrated photonic circuits.
  • Enhancing nonlinear optical effects for signal processing or sensing applications. Light is coupled into a microdisk from a nearby waveguide or fiber using evanescent coupling, where the optical field extends slightly outside the waveguide and interacts with the resonator. The resonant condition depends on the disk radius, refractive index, and wavelength, allowing precise control over which wavelengths are transmitted or dropped .

Integration and Applications

Microdisk resonators are often integrated with silicon photonics platforms to create compact, high-speed optical circuits. They are used in:

  • Optical filters and add-drop multiplexers for WDM networks.
  • Optical sensors for detecting changes in refractive index or temperature.
  • Signal processing units in on-chip optical interconnects. By combining fiber optic communication with microdisk resonators, systems achieve high bandwidth, low loss, and precise wavelength control, essential for modern telecommunications and data center networks . In summary, fiber optic communication provides the backbone for high-speed data transmission using light guided by total internal reflection, while microdisk resonators enhance functionality in integrated photonic systems by enabling selective wavelength control, filtering, and signal processing.
