  • Isolators and Circulators: Non-reciprocal devices that prevent back reflections and direct light in a specific path, critical for fiber lasers and amplifiers .
  • Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs): Reflect specific wavelengths while transmitting others, used for filtering, dispersion compensation, and laser stabilization .

Production Process

  1. Design and Specification: Components are designed with strict tolerances for insertion loss (IL), return loss (RL), and polarization-dependent loss (PDL). Specifications are translated into process windows, including alignment, AR coating quality, and statistical process control (SPC) targets .
  2. Prototyping: Early prototypes are tested for IL/RL stability across temperature ranges, polarization extinction ratio (PER) for PM components, and isolation under power load. This predicts production behavior and ensures reliability .
  3. Fabrication Techniques:
    • Fused Biconical Taper (FBT): Used for couplers, splitters, and pump combiners, where fibers are fused and tapered to achieve desired splitting ratios .
    • Planar Lightwave Circuits (PLC): Lithographically patterned waveguides on a substrate for precise splitting and multiplexing.
    • Fiber Bragg Grating Inscription: UV laser or phase mask techniques create periodic refractive index variations in the fiber core .
  4. Testing and Quality Control: Components undergo rigorous testing per Telcordia GR-1209/1221 and IEC 61300/61753 standards, including IL, RL, PDL, and environmental stress tests. Automated testing, golden samples, and Cpk goals (≥1.33) ensure consistent performance at scale .
  5. Packaging and Integration: Fibers are connectorized, spliced, or integrated into modules. High-power components may include thermal management and protective coatings to handle kilowatt-level optical power .
