Planning the Route

Before installation, plan the tray route carefully. Align trays with the building structure to avoid unnecessary crossings, detours, or interference with other utilities. Aim for the shortest and straightest path between equipment to reduce cable length, minimize signal loss, and simplify future maintenance . Mark the route clearly on site, considering clearance, load capacity, and accessibility for inspection or upgrades .

Separation and Segregation

Low-voltage (signal/control) cables must be separated from high-voltage power cables to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI). Typically, power trays are installed above low-voltage trays, maintaining a minimum vertical and horizontal distance of around 300mm (12 inches). If space is limited, use metal partitions or dividers to maintain separation . Layered separation ensures signal integrity for instrumentation and control systems.

Tray Type and Material Selection

Choose a tray type suitable for low-voltage cables:

  • Ventilated trough trays provide continuous support and prevent sagging of smaller control cables .
  • Ladder trays are better for larger power cables but can be used for low-voltage if airflow and cable entry convenience are needed . Material selection depends on the environment:
  • Indoor, dry areas: Painted or galvanized steel trays.
  • Outdoor or high-humidity areas: Stainless steel or aluminum alloy.

Support and Installation

  • Mount trays securely using brackets or supports spaced according to tray type and load, typically 1.5 to 3 meters apart .
  • Ensure trays are level, plumb, and free from excessive horizontal or vertical deviation (≤2mm/m horizontal, ≤3mm/m vertical) to prevent cable stress .
  • Use connectors and fittings to maintain alignment and continuity along bends or junctions.

Cable Laying and Management

  • Lay cables neatly within the tray, using cable ties or straps to organize by function and voltage .
  • Leave slack for expansion, movement, or future adjustments.
  • Avoid overcrowding; calculate tray width and depth based on cable count and type to prevent overheating or mechanical damage .

Maintenance and Safety

  • Ensure bonding and grounding requirements are met for safety and compliance .
  • Maintain easy access for inspection, testing, and future upgrades.
