Structure and Function

A dual-core pigtail consists of two optical fibers bundled together, typically in a tight-buffered or zipcord configuration, with factory-terminated connectors on one end and bare fiber ends on the other . The bare ends are designed to be spliced to the fibers of a main distribution cable, while the connector ends plug into active equipment or patch panels. The pigtail sleeve is a protective housing that aligns the two fibers during splicing, ensuring minimal insertion loss and back reflection .

Working Principle

  1. Alignment: The dual-core fibers are inserted into the sleeve, which precisely aligns the cores of both fibers. Proper alignment is critical because even microscopic misalignment can cause significant signal loss or reflection .
  2. Splicing: The bare fiber ends are joined to the main cable fibers using fusion splicing or mechanical splicing. In fusion splicing, an electric arc melts the fiber ends, creating a seamless joint.
