Optical fiber serves as the high-performance transmission medium for fiber optic communication. It is a thin, cylindrical strand of glass or plastic that guides light signals over long distances with minimal loss. The fiber consists of a core that carries the light and a cladding with a slightly lower refractive index to confine the light through total internal reflection. Optical fibers are categorized into single-mode (allowing one light path) and multimode (allowing multiple light paths), with graded-index fibers reducing modal dispersion for multimode transmission . This technology enables high bandwidth, low attenuation, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, making it ideal for long-distance and high-speed data transmission .

Semiconductor Laser Technology

The light source is another critical technology in fiber optic communication. Semiconductor lasers, such as distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers and Fabry-Pérot (FP) lasers, convert electrical signals into optical signals. DFB lasers emit a narrow, single wavelength suitable for long-distance, high-capacity communication, while FP lasers emit multiple wavelengths, which can lead to signal dispersion over distance . These lasers are highly directional, stable, and capable of high-speed modulation, allowing data rates of tens of gigabits per second. At the receiving end, photodiodes convert the optical signals back into electrical signals for processing .
