Optical fiber transmission modes are classified into several categories

Optical fiber transmission modes are classified into single-mode and multimode fibers, based on the number of light paths they support.

Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)

Single-mode fibers allow only one light path or mode to propagate through the fiber core. This is achieved by having a very small core diameter, typically around 8–10 micrometers, which ensures that light travels along a single central axis. Single-mode fibers are ideal for long-distance communication because they experience minimal modal dispersion, maintaining signal integrity over hundreds of kilometers. They are commonly used in telecommunications, internet backbones, and high-speed networks. Single-mode fibers require laser light sources for precise transmission and are more expensive than multimode fibers due to their small core and high precision requirements .

Multimode Fiber (MMF)

Multimode fibers support multiple light paths or modes simultaneously. The core diameter is larger, typically 50–62.5 micrometers, allowing several light rays to travel through different paths. This results in modal dispersion, where light rays arrive at the receiver at slightly different times, limiting the bandwidth and transmission distance. Multimode fibers are suitable for short-distance applications, such as Local Area Networks (LANs), data centers, and intra-building connections. They are generally cheaper and easier to connect than single-mode fibers and can use LED light sources .

Key Differences Between Single-Mode and Multimode Fibers

  • Core Size: Single-mode ~8–10 µm, Multimode ~50–62.5 µm
  • Light Paths: Single-mode supports one path, Multimode supports multiple paths
  • Distance: Single-mode suitable for long distances, Multimode for short distances
  • Dispersion: Single-mode has minimal modal dispersion, Multimode experiences modal dispersion
  • Applications: Single-mode for telecom and high-speed networks, Multimode for LANs and short-range communication

Additional Notes

Optical fibers can also be classified based on refractive index profiles:

  • Step-index fibers: Core has uniform refractive index, simpler and low-cost
  • Graded-index fibers: Refractive index gradually decreases from the center to the edge, reducing dispersion and improving signal clarity Understanding these classifications helps in selecting the appropriate fiber type for specific communication requirements, balancing distance, bandwidth, and cost.
