Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the preferred method for ring optical cables due to its durability and low signal loss:

  • Process: Cleave fibers, insert them into a mechanical splice connector, and secure with a protective sleeve. The gel minimizes reflection and signal loss .
  • Advantages: Quick installation, no expensive equipment, suitable for emergency repairs or temporary connections.
  • Limitations: Higher signal loss (0.2–0.5 dB), less durable, sensitive to environmental conditions. Mechanical splicing is often used for fieldwork, testing, or temporary ring extensions.

Ribbon Fiber Splicing in Ring Networks

For high-count ribbon fibers (e.g., 216 fibers), splicing requires careful handling:

  • Ring Cut Method: Open the fiber ribbon ring, pull and secure individual fibers, apply D'Gel or similar alignment gel, and splice fibers sequentially .
  • Best Practices: Maintain fiber order, avoid bending below minimum radius, and protect splices with heat-shrink sleeves or splice trays. Ribbon splicing is common in large-scale ring networks where multiple fibers must be joined simultaneously.
