Hydropower distribution boxes are typically fabricated from 2 mm GI sheet steel, designed for outdoor use, with IP-55 protection, reinforced structure, and busbar arrangements sized according to transformer capacity.

Material and Construction

Hydropower distribution boxes are generally outdoor-rated and fabricated from 2 mm galvanized iron (GI) sheet steel for durability and corrosion resistance. The body is reinforced with suitable channels, and the roof is slightly slanted with a 50 mm overhang to prevent water ingress. Doors are equipped with concealed hinges and Godrej-type 3-position locking systems, with additional galvanized manual locking provisions to avoid rusting. Solid earthing points are provided on either side of the box to ensure safety and compliance with electrical standards .

Protection and Standards

The boxes are designed to meet IP-55 degree of protection, ensuring resistance to dust and water jets. Type test certificates from approved laboratories (e.g., CPRI) are required to validate compliance. Insulators, busbars, and other components must conform to IEC or IS standards applicable for low-tension (LT) supply .

Busbar and Electrical Arrangements

  • Busbars are made of EC-grade aluminum, with cross-sectional dimensions depending on transformer capacity:
    • 63/100 KVA: 72×50×8 mm
    • 160/315 KVA: 120×50×15 mm
  • Incoming and outgoing droppers are sized accordingly:
    • 63/100 KVA: 50×8 mm
    • 160/315 KVA: 50×15 mm
  • Provision for one busbar arrangement with 4-pole MCCB and outgoing feeder arrangements with 2 sets of 3-pole MCCBs is standard. Porcelain cutouts are used for protection in higher-capacity boxes (160/315 KVA) and must be of reputed make .

Dimensions and Mounting

Distribution boxes vary in size depending on the number of ways (1-way to 36-ways) and type (TOP-TS, TOP-TF, TOP-LS, TOP-PS, TOP-PF, TOP-S). Typical dimensions include length, width, and height, which are specified in manufacturer catalogues and general arrangement drawings. Mounting provisions are included for secure installation, with adequate clearance for busbars and droppers .

Additional Features

  • Doors and panels are designed for easy operation and maintenance.
  • Arc-chutes with minimum 12 strips are provided in isolators to extinguish arcs quickly.
  • Phase sequence RYB is maintained, and PVC insulating sleeves are used for color-coded phase identification.
  • Boxes are designed to withstand mechanical and electrical stresses, including breaking capacities up to 80 kA for isolators . These specifications ensure that hydropower distribution boxes are robust, safe, and compliant with electrical standards, suitable for outdoor installation in hydroelectric power plants .
