Optical Storage

Optical storage is a data storage method that uses laser light to read and write information on optically readable media such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs . Data is recorded by creating patterns of marks on the disc surface, which are then read by a laser beam. Unlike magnetic or semiconductor storage, optical storage allows for real-time recording and long-term data preservation. Advanced forms include 3D optical storage, which enables data to be stored with three-dimensional resolution, increasing storage density .

Optical modules are optoelectronic devices used in fiber-optic communication systems to convert electrical signals into optical signals and back . They operate at the physical layer of the OSI model and are essential for high-speed data transmission in data centers, telecommunications, and emerging technologies like 5G and AI networks .

Key Components

  • TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts electrical signals into optical signals using a laser diode (LD) or LED. It includes a light source, optical interface, monitoring photodiode, housing, and electrical interface . Laser diodes are preferred for high-speed, long-distance transmission due to their higher output power and efficiency.
  • ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using a photodetector .
  • Driver and Control Circuits: Manage laser modulation, automatic optical power control (APC), and signal amplification.
  • Housing and Interfaces: Provide mechanical protection and electrical/optical connectivity.

  • Transmission Distance: Limited by fiber loss and dispersion, affecting signal integrity over long distances.
  • Interface Rate: Maximum data rate supported, ranging from hundreds of Mbps to hundreds of Gbps .

Advanced Technologies

Modern optical modules incorporate silicon photonics, co-packaged optics (CPO), and electro-absorption modulated lasers (EML) to achieve ultra-high-speed transmission, low power consumption, and high integration density . Techniques like PAM6 modulation allow more data per light pulse, supporting 400G and beyond per lane.
