What It Is

The core of the fiber carries the light, while a surrounding cladding layer ensures total internal reflection, keeping the light within the core and minimizing signal loss . How It Works

Data travels through the fiber as light pulses, which can move at speeds approaching 70% of the speed of light in a vacuum . This method avoids the resistance, inductance, and capacitance limitations of copper cables, allowing for higher bandwidth and longer transmission distances without significant signal degradation . Single-mode fibers are used for long-distance transmission, allowing light to travel in a straight path with minimal loss, while multi-mode fibers are suitable for shorter distances and can carry multiple light paths simultaneously .
