Fiber Optic Communication and Power Materials

Fiber optic cables are primarily made of ultra-pure silica glass or specialized polymers, with additional coatings, strength members, and protective jackets to ensure efficient and durable signal transmission.

Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the fiber where light signals travel. It is typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium or phosphorus to slightly increase the refractive index, which helps confine light within the core through total internal reflection. Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica, sometimes doped with fluorine or boron to slightly lower its refractive index, ensuring the light remains trapped in the core for minimal signal loss .

Coatings and Protective Layers

To protect the delicate glass fiber, a dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coating is applied. The soft primary coating cushions the fiber, while the hard secondary coating provides mechanical protection. For identification, UV-cured color inks are used, and in ribbon cables, a UV-curable resin matrix holds multiple fibers together .

Strength Members

Fiber optic cables include strength members to prevent stretching and mechanical damage. Common materials include aramid yarn (e.g., Kevlar®), which is lightweight, strong, and non-conductive. In some outdoor or armored cables, steel wires or fiberglass rods are added for extra protection .

Jackets and Environmental Protection

The outer jacket shields the cable from environmental hazards such as moisture, UV radiation, and fire. Common materials include polyethylene (PE) for outdoor use and high-density PE (HDPE) for enhanced crush resistance. Indoor cables may use plenum-rated jackets for fire safety .

Alternative and Specialty Materials

For specific applications, plastic optical fibers (POF) made from poly(methyl methacrylate, PMMA) are used for short-distance communication due to their flexibility and ease of installation, though they have higher attenuation than glass fibers. Specialty glasses, such as fluoride-based glasses, are used for mid-infrared applications like medical lasers or chemical sensing .

Summary

In essence, fiber optic communication cables combine high-purity silica or polymer cores, cladding with controlled refractive indices, protective coatings, strength members, and environmentally resistant jackets. These materials collectively ensure efficient light transmission, mechanical durability, and long-term reliability in telecommunications, data centers, and industrial applications .
