Wiring of circuit breaker and residual current device distribution box

Residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs or RCBOs) should be wired with the live (phase) connected to the line terminal, neutral to the neutral busbar, and earth to the grounding terminal, ensuring proper isolation and protection for each circuit.

Key Components and Preparation

A typical distribution box includes MCBs, RCCBs/RCBOs, isolator switches, and busbars for live, neutral, and earth conductors. Before wiring:

  • Switch off the main supply and lock it to prevent accidental energization.
  • Verify power isolation using a voltage tester between live, neutral, and earth terminals.
  • Identify and mark circuits to avoid wiring errors when connecting RCBOs or RCCBs.
  • Prepare tools such as insulated screwdrivers, wire strippers, pliers, and a multimeter for testing .

Wiring Procedure for Single-Phase RCBO/RCCB

  1. Mount the device on the DIN rail inside the distribution box, ensuring it is securely clipped and aligned with the busbar .
  2. Connect the incoming supply:
    • Live (phase) wire to the line terminal (L).
    • Neutral wire to the neutral busbar or the device's neutral terminal.
    • Earth wire to the earth terminal of the distribution box.
  3. Connect outgoing circuits:
    • The load side of the RCBO/RCCB connects to the respective phase and neutral wires of the protected circuit.
    • Ensure that the line and neutral of the same circuit remain paired to maintain proper residual current detection .
  4. Check polarity and connections: Verify that all terminals are tightened to the manufacturer's torque specifications and that no conductors are loose.
  5. Test the device: After wiring, switch on the main supply and press the test button on the RCBO/RCCB to ensure it trips correctly, confirming proper installation .

Wiring in Multi-Circuit Distribution Boards

  • In split-load consumer units, some circuits may be protected by RCBOs while others use MCBs with an RCD.
  • The phase busbar distributes live wires to each MCB or RCBO, while the neutral busbar connects all neutral wires, including the RCBO neutral if it uses a fly lead.
  • Earth conductors from all circuits should be connected to the main earth terminal to ensure safety and compliance with regulations .

Safety Considerations

  • Always verify dead circuits before touching wires.
  • Follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram for each device, as terminal layouts may vary.
  • Ensure no mixing of neutral wires from different circuits on the same RCBO, as this can prevent proper tripping.
  • Use cable markers to maintain clarity in complex distribution boards . By following these steps, the RCBO or RCCB will provide effective protection against overcurrent, short circuits, and earth leakage, ensuring a safe and compliant electrical installation.
