Why is the optical power meter reading negative

A negative reading on an optical power meter can result either from sensor artifacts in thermal detectors or from measuring optical power below a reference level in fiber optics.

Thermal Sensor Artifacts

For thermopile-based laser power meters, a negative reading does not mean the laser output is negative. These sensors measure heat flow from the absorber disc to the sensor body. If the sensor body becomes warmer than the absorber disc, the internal temperature gradient reverses, causing the thermopile voltage polarity to flip. This produces a temporary negative reading even though the laser is functioning normally. Common causes include handling the sensor with warm hands, nearby heat sources, or insufficient thermal stabilization. Allowing the sensor to reach thermal equilibrium usually resolves the issue, and re-zeroing the meter after stabilization ensures accurate readings (Ophir Optics) .

Fiber Optic Measurements

In fiber optic systems, negative readings are often expressed in dBm, a logarithmic scale relative to 1 milliwatt. A negative dBm value simply indicates that the measured optical power is less than 1 mW, which is typical for signals that have traveled long distances or experienced attenuation. For example, a reading of -10 dBm corresponds to 0.1 mW of optical power. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. Similarly, optical loss is measured in dB, and a negative dB reading can occur when comparing measured power to a reference, but by convention, loss is reported as a positive number (FOA, LinkedIn, Dintek) .

Key Points to Remember

  • Negative readings in thermopile sensors are usually due to thermal imbalance, not the laser itself.
  • Negative dBm readings in fiber optics indicate low optical power relative to 1 mW, which is normal for long fiber runs or attenuated signals.
  • Always ensure the sensor is thermally stable and that the meter is calibrated correctly for the type of measurement (absolute power in dBm or relative loss in dB).
  • Negative values are not inherently problematic; they are either a measurement artifact or a logarithmic representation of low power. By understanding the context—sensor type and measurement units—you can correctly interpret negative optical power readings and avoid misdiagnosing equipment issues.
