Wiring Principle of Relay Protection Devices

Relay protection wiring ensures that protective relays reliably detect faults and operate circuit breakers to isolate faulty sections while maintaining system stability.

Overview of Relay Wiring

Relay protection devices are connected to the power system through current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs), which step down high currents and voltages to levels suitable for relay operation . The wiring behind these devices includes:

  • Control circuits: These connect the relay to the circuit breaker trip and close coils, alarm indicators, and auxiliary contacts.
  • Signal circuits: CT and VT secondary outputs are wired to the relay inputs, ensuring accurate measurement of current and voltage.
  • Auxiliary circuits: Provide DC supply, indication, and interlocking functions.

Terminal Numbering and Connections

Standard terminal numbering is used to simplify wiring and maintenance:

  • Coil terminals: Typically 85 and 86 for the relay coil.
  • Contact terminals: 30, 87, and 87a for normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts .
  • CT/VT connections: CT secondaries are connected to relays with proper polarity to ensure correct directional operation. Multiple relays can share the same CT, but the total burden must not exceed the CT rating .

Wiring Practices

  • Separation of circuits: High-current power circuits are physically separated from low-current control circuits to prevent interference and ensure safety .
  • Color coding and ferrules: Multicore cables are color-coded, and ferrules are used to identify individual wires at terminal strips .
  • Insulation and protection: Wires must be insulated for the voltage level and protected against mechanical damage, moisture, and vibration.
  • Routing: Wires should be neatly routed along trays or ducts, avoiding sharp bends and minimizing electromagnetic interference.

Functional Considerations

  • Reliability: Relays must operate correctly under fault conditions, so wiring must be robust and tested .
  • Discrimination: Proper wiring ensures selective tripping, isolating only the faulty section without affecting healthy parts of the system.
  • Testing and commissioning: After wiring, relays and associated circuits are tested for continuity, polarity, and correct operation before energizing the system .

Summary

Wiring behind relay protection devices is a critical aspect of power system protection. It involves connecting CTs, VTs, and control circuits to relays using standardized terminal numbering, proper insulation, and careful routing. Following best practices ensures reliable fault detection, selective tripping, and safe operation of the electrical system .
