Fiber optic cables, especially Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) and aerial distribution cables, require robust support to maintain performance and longevity. Mechanical suspension systems are used to support spans of cable across poles or towers, accommodating vertical, transverse, and longitudinal loads without damaging the cable strands or optical fibers. Breakaway bolts and lightweight designs allow for easy installation while maintaining proper tension and alignment across line angles .

Types of Suspension Hardware

  1. Suspension Clamps Suspension clamps hold the cable's dead weight at intermediate poles while allowing the natural catenary curve to form. They are designed to “hold without squeezing”, using cushioned jaws or high-durometer rubber inserts to distribute load evenly and prevent micro-bending in the fibers .

While rods may not be reusable, other hardware components can be reused if in good condition .
  4. FTTH and ADSS Accessories For Fiber to the Home (FTTH) and All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) networks, stainless steel, nylon, and composite clamps, brackets, and tension fittings are used to secure cables along poles and buildings. These fittings ensure low signal loss, reliable connections, and long-term durability under environmental stress .

Installation Considerations

  • Proper alignment and torque are critical to avoid fiber damage. Some systems use breakaway bolts to ensure correct installation torque without specialized tools .
  • Clamps must accommodate the cable diameter and allow for thermal expansion and contraction.
  • Preformed dead-end grips and tension clamps are installed at endpoints, road crossings, or directional changes to maintain cable tension and prevent sagging .
  • Cushioned inserts or molded rubber components prevent direct metal-to-cable contact, reducing the risk of micro-bending and signal attenuation .
